After a justifiably long design and consultation process, Torton were successful in being awarded the contract to design and build Alcon, their first ‘Mobile Operating Suite’.
The mobile cataract surgery trailers are 13.5m long with double self supporting pods to both sides, this in turn connects together to provide a seamless platform, from which Alcon in association with their partners can operate a full service from. The trailers combined create 153 square meters of space.
Entering the reception trailer via the double stepped entrance, which also incorporates a disabled access lift, the double doors lead you into a welcoming patient processing area. The waiting room is also home to wheelchair suitable toilet facilities, a pre-operation assessment room, staff room with kitchen facilities, and a server/ control room. The complete side of the trailer is glazed providing the patients with a welcoming approach from outside, but also a relaxed and less clinical look from the inside.
Moving further into the operating suite, and entered via electrically operated doors the operating facility continue. Compliant with HTM-03-01 the operating suite comprises of a anaesthetic room which starts the patient journey. After this the operating theatre is accessed, again via electric sliding doors. The theatre room is kitted out with storage facilities, workspace with data connections, dimmable lighting, and a laminar flow hood, as well as the operating equipment provided by our client, Alcon. Leading off from the theatre room is a dirty utility, scrub room and store room all with the necessary cascading air changes required to comply. The water system which feeds these rooms and the remainder of the clinic, has been designed to meet HTM 04-01.
Finally the patient journey would move into the ‘recovery room’ before making their way back into the foyer and back into reception for discharging. As well as the previously mentioned staff facilities, staff also have their own dedicated changing rooms with lockable storage.
The mobile operating theatre trailers are of a high specification and also include a built in super silent generator to be used as back up power. In addition to this, the mobile operating theatre also incorporates a UPS system to enable surgeons to come to the end of their procedure safely without disruption, should a power outage occur and while the generator starts up.
